Omegas in the Spirit of Colonel Charles Young

On Friday, February 29th 2008, four men of Omega Psi Phi fraternity set out on a road trip back to Columbus Ohio. Almost 90 years after Colonel Young’s historic horseback journey from Wilberforce to Washington D.C. to prove his fitness to serve, Nick Mosby, Satchell Doyle Jr., D’Juan Neal, and Theodore Fikre made the trek back to Ohio to serve and show their fitness to represent Omega Psi Phi with distinction.

Nick, Satchell, and D’Juan—from Pi Omega Chapter—embarked on their journey from Baltimore MD and linked up with Theodore Fikre—Eta Delta Delta Chapter—on their Barack-O-Van to Columbus. Four men with audacious aims are the cornerstone of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, thus it comes as no surprise that these four men set out on their trip with the audacity to make a difference in Ohio. They arrived in Columbus on Friday night, enduring a snowstorm in West Virginia along the way.

The stay in Columbus was a memorable one. Brother Allen was the personification of “my brother’s keeper”, he went above and beyond the call of duty, showing these four sojourners around town and introducing them to the men of the fourth district. The men of Iota Psi—undergraduate chapter of the Ohio State University—and Mu Iota took great care of Nick, Satchell, D’Juan, and Theodore. They also ran across a brother by the name of Mario Marcus #3 96 from Psi Theta (what else can one expect from 96)—a man of Omega deeply immersed in the history of our beloved fraternity. The men of Upsilon Chapter—Wilberforce University—were there in strong numbers having made a journey of their own to Columbus Ohio. Nick, Satchell, D’Juan, and Theo did an outstanding job representing the true spirit of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated.

While Omegas are recognized for the "Que Dog" spirit, they recognized that the most important aspect was that of being a true Omega man. The fraternity was formed to be a pillar in the African American community. A pillar that fought for dignity during the Jim Crow era, fought for freedom during World War II, and fought for equality during the Civil Rights era. Thus, Omega Psi Phi has a rich history of being at the forefront of historical moments. In this spirit, these four men knocked on hundreds of doors, made phone calls, and volunteered their services to the Obama campaign in Ohio. These four men, with their collective actions, made a difference in Ohio and represented the true meaning of friendship and brotherhood along the way.
